Calf Data Long Term – Co. Wicklow

This trial aimed to estimate the cost-benefit of using Precision Microbes and a look at differences in ADG in a dairy farm setting. The trial was conducted at Spring based dairy farm in Co Wicklow Jan-April 2021.

 

FARM DETAILS:

  • Dairy farm with 110 cows, spring calving.
  • 90% 6-week calving rate.
  • Previous issues with rotavirus and cryptosporidium.

 

CALF MANAGEMENT:

  • Calves were managed in two groups housed in separate pens within the same shed.
  •  40 cows calved in the first 14 days.
  •  Groups were similar by weight and included a mix of bulls and heifers.
  •  Control Group: 8 heifers and 7 bulls.
  •  Treatment Group (receiving Precision Microbes): 9 heifers and 6 bulls.
  •  All cows were vaccinated with Rotavac Corona.
  •  RSV live vaccine administered to all calves at day 10-14.
  •  Calves fed whole milk, 3 liters twice daily, using a milk cart and 15-teat compartment feeder.
  •  Separate compartment feeders were used for each pen.

 

TREATMENT GROUP:

  • Received 30ml of Precision Microbes daily through milk from arrival to
    weaning.
  • Precision Microbes was added to the morning milk.

 

CONTROL GROUP:

  • No additives in the milk.
  • Fed with the same whole milk as the treatment group.

Findings

Treatment Group (Precision Microbes) gained 703g/day
Control Group gained 614g/day
Weight difference of 6.2kg between Treatment Group and Control Group
