DAIRY TO BEEF

2021

DAIRY TO BEEF – CO. WEXFORD

The trial involved 40 calves in total: 20 in the treatment group and 20 in the control group. The calves were randomly assigned to groups by the farmer, who filled pens with new arrivals, presenting a selection risk.

Both groups were fed the same milk replacer, prepared in batches of 10 on a tenteat feeder. The treatment group received a daily dose of 30ml of Precision Microbes through their milk from arrival to weaning.

The focus of the trial was on Average Daily Gain (ADG) of the calves. Weights were monitored by the farm manager, who recorded the last weights.

Both treatment and control groups were housed together in the same large calf rearing unit and received identical feed: 3 litres TAD (Twice a Day) with 150g/ litre of high-quality milk replacer (HQ MR).

The farmer noted fewer interventions were needed in the treated group. All calves, regardless of group, were transitioned to Precision Microbes following the trial due to the observed benefits.

Tommy visited the farm at the start and during the trial to oversee the process. This structured approach allowed for a thorough evaluation of Precision Microbes’ effect on calf growth under typical farm conditions, focusing on the practical implications for dairy-to-beef operations.
